Off and on through out my teenage & adult life i've had some transient lower back pain. Mostly due to having a scoliosis diagnosed when I was a kid but then again that might have been made worse thanks to a poor diagnosis of a slightly shorter left leg... this turns out to be complete bollocks... When I had a bike fit all the biomechanics were looked at and I have perfectly equal length legs.... all three of them ...
So anyway on the recommendation of a friend and some knowledge myself I purchased a set of Trigger Point massages from TP Performance the kit I got was the TP Ultimate Performance Kit. I'll probably look at getting the foam roller next month as that is good for core workouts as well.
I'll do some reporting on how it goes.

Alcohol...
Sorry for the lack of a regular update... had my brother and his family up for Easter. It has been a bit of a poor week for running, mostly because this is my week on shift and so far its been pretty average. This brings up the other part of my life... I'm a Registered Nurse working in a remote country town. This week we had two motor vehicle accidents in two days... both drivers were under the influence of alcohol but luckily no one else was injured. This led me to be awake for 29hours whilst dealing with one of the patients and waiting for the RFDS and so this effected my training a bit :D The two vehicles are in the photo below.
Other than that I'm been just doing my running... though I have basically decided to do a majority of the running barefoot. I'm still easing into it with doing a 2min run/3min walk.

Headwinds
It was good to get onto the bike this morning. Was nice to feel the legs pumping, though there were a few dicey moments at the start whilst heading into a decent headwind. Not sure if it was just the right/wrong angle for the 80mm rims but I was getting buffeted around. Luckily it was only on the town roads and not on the highway where the 4 trailer haul trucks are.
If there is one thing I have learnt and thats to always go into the headwinds at the start of your ride, and it definately paid off today. There was a massive difference (24.35km/hr vs. 36.45km/hr).
I still managed to have to lie on the floor with my feet up as I wanted to vomit...

City to Surf Half Marathon
Signed up for the Perth City to Surf Half Marathon this afternoon... 21.1km's of groundpounding fun for the whole family.... I have two targets and two targets only. Firstly to finish and Second to finish faster than my Half Ironman time of 2:47:26

Weighed myself this morning... 111.5kg... so down 1.5kg since Sunday... some of that might have to do with hydration but I'm not so sure. Anyways, I'll take it.

Run 2mins / Walk 4mins
My run from last night... feeling pretty good... though am only slowly building back up... 4x 2min runs over 28mins. So the pace of 7:36 includes that walking component.

Goals
Personally I find the only way I can exercise effectively is to have firm goals planned out. It worked to get me to Canberra, with having to get up at 345am before I start work at 6am...

People often ask "what time did you complete your race?". Those people have no idea as to the real reason that 99% of people do these things. It's not about beating others its about beating yourself, pushing yourself, acknowledging that no matter what pain you feel in life you will not give up... I will keep running even if I don't make the cutoff, its not about the medal at the end.
This is why during a triathlon, especially during either of the Ironman events you will see 'competitors" slow down or even stop to encourage people to keep going. Blown a tire and used your last one? I've seen people given spares by total strangers....

Fitdeck & Restarting
Picked up Fitdeck Mobile on my Android phone (i assume they have it for the Apple iOS too) and added bodyweight and pilates decks. I think its a great combination as 1) you always have your phone with you and 2) you always have yourself with you.....
They are relatively good value at $6.99 for the initial program (includes one deck) and the Pilates was $9.99.
As I work 12hr shifts today is a fitdeck/run day so throughout today I'm doing 2 cards an hour and then a half hour walk/run at 6pm.
..... on another note, don't you just love that burn/pain you get when restarting your program? I'm not terribly unfit in the grand scheme of things but I havent done very much structured exercise since completing the Canberra Half IM in 2010.

Weightloss and Running
So here goes... the first picture of the scales from this morning... 112.9kg.... only 19.1kg to lose. (oh and i was 106 when I did the Canberra Half Ironman)
Went for a fun last night in the Thunderstorm and some light rain which was quite nice. Am following the couch to 5k program loosely to get the running up to speed. I am trying to utilise a different gait - shorter stride and fast turn over , landing on the ball of the foot, not the heel. So basically barefoot running with shoes.
Why am I trying to concentrate on my weight and running? They go hand in hand with decreasing the risk of injury. The reduction of weight means less loading on joints (I think when running your joints strike at a force of something like 8-13G's so being 20kg overweight mean I'm stressing my knees between 160-260kg each and every step I take). Not to mention the decreased oxygen requirement and cardiovascular risk reduction....
The running component is a mixture of decreasing energy expenditure, increasing speed (hopefully) and decreasing injury. This is attained via the body's natural shock absorbers the fore/mid foot and the calves instead of the heel. The increased speed is via the decreased tiredness/pain of heel striking.

Tri License
Signed up with Triathlon WA & Stadium Triathlon Club yesterday for what I thought was next season... except it wasnt... dammit. ahh well either way it will get me early entry to the Busselton Half Ironman in 2013 (entries open a few weeks after this years event).
Part of the reason I'm looking so far ahead is that I want to reduce the chance of injury... and as part of that there is 20kgs of excess baggage I want to shed before then... which will land me at my BMI for the first time since Highschool... we shall see.
Planning on taking a photo of the scales tomorrow and then each week to be accountable...

Too long off the horse
It's been a while, a long while (more than 18 months) since I have posted here. A lot of things have gone on since my last post, including completing my first half Ironman, becoming a father for the second time to a beautiful baby girl and changing jobs. But I have plans, maybe not huge ones but plans to do two more halves and a full next year.
I'm not the slowest but in the bottom 20% for time in completing the half... but I'm happy. Happy that I've done it and that only those that have trained that hard and that long can ever understand what it means.
